NATURAL REEFS:
Natural reefs are in the 80'-120' range with many
being within 5 miles off shore. Some of the most popular
sites are Anna's Reef, Amberjack Reef, and White Hill.
Small corals and sponges dot these reefs with ledges
ranging from 1 to 10 feet from the bottom. Marine life
ranges from Giant Southern Stingrays to the smallest
juvenile Blue Angel Fish.
MAN MADE REEFS:
Some of the most popular man made reef sites are the Destin Bridge
Rubble, The Tanks and The Pipe Culverts. The Destin Bridge Rubble is
the remains of the old
Destin Bridge that was torn down and deposited approximately 1-2 miles
offshore as a fish haven. It has been down for many years and is a
favorite spot for those wanting to see a wide variety of sea life.
Average depth is
65'-70'. The tanks are intact M-60 military tanks sunk
in approximately 70' of water and make a great photo
opportunity. The Culverts are 4' round pipe culverts
and offer a great spot for larger fish to congregate.
WRECKS:
Wrecks in the area range from a 400' Liberty Ship
sunk in 85' of water near White Hill Reef to the Miss
Louise in 56'. Other wrecks are the LCM, The Phoenix
and the Air Force Barge. The Liberty Ship almost always
has large Southern Stingrays and Amberjack as well as
an abundance of Flounder and Grouper. The Miss Louise
is a VERY popular shallow water site, not only for its
depth, but also for the marine life around it.
The Phoenix also has a resident Nurse Shark that has made
its home in a culvert just off the stern and the Fuel Tanker barge
has had a 200 lb.
resident Goliath Grouper lately.
